They are made from nylon (or polyethylene terephthalate). Mechanical filters can make use of sponges or foams made from synthetic materials, ceramic and sintered glass, silicon products, and igneous gravel. Rarely are aquarium filters purely mechanical because bacteria tend to settle on the filter materials, thereby affecting biological filtration to some degree.

The simplest way to filter aquarium is to create a device made from synthetic wool and activated carbon. Large particles are filtered by the synthetic wool, while the smaller ones are absorbed by the activated carbon. This type has to be changed on a regular basis at appropriate intervals because if the activated carbon is allowed to saturate, it may discharge the contents they have absorbed in large and potently harmful doses.
