There are a number of types for aquarium filters. One of which is the aquarium sponge filter. A sponge filter draws aquarium water through a sponge, which is mounted or sits inside the tank. These filters are usually powered by external air pumps. They also come with replaceable sponges.

How does an aquarium sponge filter work? A sponge filter makes use of air bubbles generated by the external air pump or by an integral water pump that draws water through the sponge. When the lift tube draws out the water, it is replaced by the water that enters the sponge material.

An aquarium sponge filter provides both mechanical filtration and biological filtration. Although sponge filters are not the best materials for mechanical filtration, they make excellent primary or secondary filters when used with other filters. It also acts as an excellent biological filter since the porous surface allows the bacteria to colonize. Sponges can maintain large quantities of aerobic bacterial colonies.

Does an aquarium sponge filter need much maintenance? Sponge filters are easier to clean than other aquarium filter materials. Users have to rinse or replace the sponge once it becomes dirty. This usually takes about one to four weeks before it needs to be cleaned again. The frequency of rinsing or replacing depends on the aquarium’s load, the kinds of fish, the feeding schedule, the type of food, and other filtration devices used on the aquarium. For sponge filters with carbon cartridges, these have to be replaced as frequently as possible. Carbon cartridges can be saturated with toxins and other waste chemicals, which in turn can be released into the aquarium.

Why are aquarium sponge filters recommended? First, these filters are uncomplicated and anyone can understand how to install and clean them. Sponges can last several years but for the health of the fish in the aquariums, it is best that they be replaced often. Second, they are ideal choices for aquariums with tiny fishes because unlike other aquarium filter materials, sponges do not function like suctions. Sponge filters are best used for hatcheries, maternity and nursery tanks, and fry aquariums. This is why it is sometimes called a breeder filter. Third, an aquarium sponge filter is a reliable and effective choice for small volume aquariums. They are also effective as supplementary biological filters for heavily stocked aquariums.
